Description: This video teaches you how to calculate the charge of the cation of an ionic compound. Cations are from metals. Simple anions are from non-metals. There are 3 methods to determine the charge of the cation and the charge of the anion. The first method is to use the periodic table, alkali metal ions have +1 charge, alkaline earth metal ions have +2 charge, the charge of the most stable ions of the 3rd group, aluminum, gallium etc. is +3. The charge of the transition metal ions can NOT be predicted
