Part 1 of 7 of the D.H. Lawrence novel from 1981. Gertrude Morel struggles to adapt to her new surroundings after the family have moved to a mining village in Nottingham, where her alcoholic husband Walter works down the pits. Her marriage is not a happy one, and with little money coming by and another child on the way she looks back on how she first met her husband. She pours all her hopes into her children, in particular her eldest son William, but little realizes what fate has in store for them...<br/><br/>Starring Eileen Atkins, Tom Bell, Geoffrey Burridge, Myrtle Devenish, Wilfred Grove, Molly Guilfoyle, Ian Kirkby, Craig Napier, Amanda Parfitt, Mark Rockley, John Quarmby, Brenda Peters, Glyn Cook, Jacqui Cassidy and David Allister. This is from a TV recording from when it was originally broadcast on January 14th 1981, so apologies in advance for any glitches or picture quality issues there may be. This is one series I was fortunate enough to save from Mick's Nostalgia Channel and as it is a series that does not seem to of been released on DVD since is a rare find indeed. It's slow moving at 7 episodes, but faithful enough to the D.H. Lawrence novel from which it is adapted from.

The elder sister witnesses this heart-wrenching decision and tries to dissuade her to no avail.<br/><br/>In an attempt to shield John from further anguish, the elder sister decides to deceive him. She wears the abandoned wedding ring, concealing the truth until his affliction can be remedied by a confident doctor. The operation holds promise, and the sister goes to the theater to convince the wife to return.<br/><br/>After a heated argument, the wife reluctantly agrees to visit John. As his bandages are removed in a darkened room, he sees vague figures around him. Spotting his wife, he moves towards her, but she recoils guiltily and, in her nervousness, accidentally pulls down the curtains, allowing a harsh flash of light to reach his eyes, causing irreparable blindness.<br/><br/>Horrified by her actions, the wife rushes out of the house. Despite his blindness, John's hearing remains intact, allowing him to learn the truth. Now, he feels in his heart what he failed to see with his eyes.<br/><br/>Director : D.W.
