“When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting” at the Kunstmuseum Basel showcases over 150 works by around 120 Black artists from the past century, highlighting the political and joyous aspects of Black life. Originally curated by the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, this exhibition emphasizes Black self-representation and empowerment, contrasting with typical portrayals focused on trauma and colonialism. The title, inspired by Ava DuVernay’s miniseries “When They See Us,” signifies a shift towards Black perspectives. Curated by Koyo Kouoh and Tandazani Dhlakama, the exhibition is organized into six thematic chapters, exploring universal themes like joy, spirituality, and everyday life. It reveals iconographic parallels among geographically diverse Black artists. The exhibition includes a comprehensive program of events and features sound stations curated by Neo Muyanga, providing visitors with a rich, contextual experience of Black joy and resilience. The show is quite special, as for the first time in the Fondation Beyeler’s more than 25-year history, the entire museum and its surrounding park will be transformed into the site of an experimental presentation of contemporary art. Participating artists include Michael Armitage, Anne Boyer, Federico Campagna, Ian Cheng, Chuquimamani-Condori and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, Marlene Dumas, Frida Escobedo, Peter Fischli, Cyprien Gaillard with Victor Man, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Wade Guyton, Carsten Höller with Adam Haar, Pierre Huyghe, Arthur Jafa, Koo Jeong A, Dozie Kanu, Cildo Meireles, Jota Mombaça, Fujiko Nakaya, Alice Notley, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno, Rachel Rose, Tino Sehgal, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Adrián Villar Rojas. The Summer Show is titled “Dance With Daemons” and is conceived as a “living organism” that changes and transforms throughout its duration.<br/><br/>Connections and interrelationships between individual works are developed in close dialogue with the artists. This exchange also extends to works from the in-house collection, which are an integral part of the project. While a number of the paintings, sculptures, films, installations, and performances were created site-specifically, others are adapted versions of existing works. Dresses and coats covered with squares made of a shimmering bead fringe were a reference to Scottish plaids.<br/><br/>Bader Content Studios Europe was invited to be on hand and learned the storied fashion house has a fascinating historical tie to the UK.Its legendary founder, Guccio Gucci, once worked as a bellhop at the Savoy, the center of luxury in London, over a century ago.<br/><br/>Brand experts told us Guccio took inspiration from that experience when he opened his first store in Florence back in 1921 to sell luggage. <br/><br/>Among the star-studded crowd in the front row were actors Paul Mescaland Andrew Scott, alongside music icons Dua Lipa and Solange Knowles. Also in the front row were Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is chair and CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company.<br/><br/>The Tate Modern is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to the multidisciplinary work of Yoko Ono, the wife and creative partner of the late Beatle John Lennon.The wing includes installations, films, scores, music, and photography, the monumental showcase spans seven decades of her artistic evolution.
