Madgaon Express left me with a bellyache – but in the best way possible. The buddy comedy made me laugh so hard for so long that it felt like I was avenging all the years of laughing at unintentionally funny films. It’s been a while. Maybe it says something about the emotionally fraught times we live in. Maybe a dam of pent-up smirks in me burst. Maybe this is what the doctor ordered. But it’s more likely that I’m overthinking this reaction: Maybe Madgaon Express is just very successful at tapping a sense of humour that some of us are too shy to reveal. An “accident prone” signpost accidentally reads “accident porn”. A group of Goan gangsters succumb to a post-lunch susegad, leaving their hostages to escape. A don named Mendoza is addressed as everything but his name: Mandakini, Mangola, Madeline. Like Uday Chopra in the Dhoom films, a needy bachelor imagines a musical life montage with the first pretty girl he sees. A coked-up Gujarati dude goes from docile to daring as if it were his superhero alter-ego. A casual chat collapses into the lyrics of an Aashiqui 2 (2013) hit (“sunn raha hai tu?” – “ro raha hu main”). It’s all so gloriously silly – and undeniably nostalgic.<br/>Madgaon Express revolves around three friends on that (un)holy pilgrimage for 80s-born desi males: A Goa trip. Their failed attempts after high school and college make the dream burn brighter. So in 2015, as full-blown but unfulfilled adults, they make the better-late-than-never dash – except Goa is nothing like the movies, and yet it’s everything like the movies. Given Madgaon Express comes from Excel Entertainment, it’s easy to describe it as a middle-class spoof of Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011). The inverted hat tips are everywhere, starting with the DCH title track transitioning from a car stereo to a hospital soundscape. Or the fact that the narrator is the ‘loser’ of the trifecta, Dhanush a.k.a Dodo (Divyenndu), who remains tragically stuck in the past. Unlike the other two, he hasn’t been able to move on, and so he’s spent his years photoshopping a fake life on Facebook – including a ‘by-chance pic’ with Farhan Akhtar and then Anurag Kashyap – with a shot of Kashyap’s reaction “abey, tu hai kaun?” (who the hell are you?) in the comments section. <br/><br/>To hide his jobless living-with-dad reality, Dodo fools the New York-based Ayush (Avinash Tiwary) and Cape Town-based Pratik (Pratik Gandhi) into doing Goa “the way we would’ve done it as college kids – penniless and free-spirited”.")

The game offers single-player and online co-op modes for up to 4 people at a time. The gameplay broadly depicts criminal life, also relying on elements known from other game genres.<br/><br/>A criminal career includes in Crime Simulator not only carrying out bandit jobs (such as theft and debt recovery) and fighting, but also, among other things, collecting raw materials, developing characters, upgrading equipment or gaining the right reputation among the factions present in the game.<br/><br/>As of May 10th 2024, a free demo of the game is now available on Steam. In Crime Simulator: Prologue, players will find one smaller settlement with a construction zone and an abandoned farm that serves as a hideout for gangsters. The full version of the game will feature three larger settlements, desert areas on the outskirts of Mexico, national park areas in Canada and several additional locations, among others. The CookieDev team is also working on a whole lot of additional content.<br/><br/>In Crime Simulator, many tools await players to use in criminal actions. The developers offer, among others, baseball bats, crowbars, rods, wrenches, knuckles, knives, telescopic batons, pistols and various types of bombs and grenades. Specialized traps and turrets will also be available for use.<br/><br/>The game is tentatively scheduled for release on PC (Steam) in 2024/2025. I know the geography like a native should and yet, I watched Shreya Dev Dube’s skilled camerawork with open-mouthed wonder. Thar’s cinematography is its hero. The desiccated terrain, the barren hills, the omnipresent dust, and the aridity of it all is so palpable, that you can feel the acute lack. Of water, vegetation, humanity. Dubey’s prowess does not just provide the right setting for the drama to unfold, it gives the film its true protagonist and thence the title.<br/><br/>The other thing that stands out about Thar is its depiction of brutality. It’s as savage and unapologetic as the acts themselves. This Netflix film is disturbingly graphic. Even by the standards of Westerns and revenge dramas. Violence begets violence, but be warned, this one shows it all—the severing of body parts, the mutilation, the slow torture, the immolation—up close and in distressing detail.<br/><br/>At the heart of it all is Inspector Surekha Singh, a weather-beaten cop six months away from retirement, played with inimitable swag by Anil Kapoor. His official rank does not justify his acumen for his job and his spirit to do it well. Dissatisfied with his unremarkable, middling career, he wants to go out with a bang. And soon enough, an opportunity plays out. There’s a shootout involving cross-border drug smuggling and a local man is found hanging from a tree, inhumanly mutilated. Surekha spurs into action.")
