Children would rather run free while playing outside over more organised games of hide and seek or sports.

A poll, of 2,000 parents of children aged 6-10 and the kids themselves, found 57 per cent named running around as their favourite thing to do.

And 43 per cent wish they could do it more.

It also emerged 75 per cent of kids feel happiest when they’re free to ‘play their own way’ without structure.

And 53 per cent get excited when they get to choose what they want to do for the day, with 54 of mums and dads wanting to incorporate more of this into their daily routines.

The research was commissioned by Dairylea, which has unveiled a giant backpack containing children’s top 10 psychologist-approved items which enable them to enjoy unstructured play, includingbinoculars, magnifying glasses and telescopes.

Dr Elizabeth Kilbey, behavioural child psychologist, who is working with the cheese brand, said: “Play, particularly unstructured play, helps develop children's emotional, physical and cognitive skills, builds confidence and aids social and decision-making skills.

“This form of play is proven to support cognitive, physical, emotional and social development - but at a more granular level boosts imagination, problem-solving, social skills and creativity.

“It’s hugely beneficial for all the family to experience these firsts and moments of discovery together.”

The study also found 33 per cent of kids who enjoy playing outside named exploring as their preferred activity, while climbing trees (20 per cent), and paddling in water (19 per cent) were also popular.

It’s not just good for the children though as 52 per cent of parents feel happy and 26 feel calm when they let their children play freely.

While 35 per cent per cent those surveyed, via OnePoll, claimed their favourite way to spend time together as a family is exploring all nature has to offer, or taking a picnic on a day out (32 per cent).

But parents take their children on an average of three fewer days out a month now than they used to, with 76 per cent citing cost as the driving force behind this change.

Instead, 57 per cent opt to let their children play indoors with toys to fill their free time together.

The constraints of everyday routine can also leave little time for families to explore freely and enjoy moments of pure playfulness together, with 59 per cent prioritising school, hobbies and their children’s friends, leaving little time for other activities.

Clo Darie Lheureux, from Dairylea, which is launching ‘Discovery Days’ in partnership with Trainline to offer £10 off family rail tickets, said: “We believe it’s important to give children the freedom to discover but recent strains on family life - with the Cost of Living crisis and the pandemic - have prevented families from taking on new experiences.

\

Ryan Gosling was one of the many to pick up a 2024 Oscar nomination, as he earned a Best Supporting Actor nod for his performance as Ken in the critically lauded Barbie. The star has received massive acclaim for his turn as the chiselled and misunderstood doll. With that, a number of notable names have been weighing in on his work and providing honest thoughts. The latest to do so is Denis Villeneuve, who notably directed the leading man in Blade Runner 2049. The filmmaker caught up with our own ReelBlend podcast, during which he reviewedGosling’s performance and recalled how he was funny while they made the sci-fi epic.

The Canadian actor’s turn as hardened replicant K in Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 flick is a far cry from the campy and heartfelt turn he gives as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s fantasy film. Of course, Ryan Gosling was able to pull off both flawlessly, though some may have wondered whether Denis Villeneuve thought he had the latter performance in him. Well, after our own Sean O’Connell asked for his thoughts on Gosling’s work, the French-Canadian auteur dropped some highly positive sentiments on Gosling's role as Ken. Not only that, but he also explained why Gosling’s comedic sensibilities in the blockbuster aren’t all that shocking to him:

Masters hopeful Gary Woodland sealed one of the most heartwarming comeback stories for many a year on Wednesday by sinking his first career hole-in-one.

Woodland, a former US Open champion, only returned to the PGA Tour at the start of the year after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor in September.

And just over six months on from the op, the 39-year-old hit the first hole-in-one of his professional career at the Augusta National Golf Club.

In the traditional Par 3 competition on the eve of the Masters, which sees players take part in a light-hearted event with members of their families serving as caddies, Woodland achieved the feat from around 140 yards out on the sixth hole.

He pulled off the hole-in-one after son Jaxson, 6, and twin daughters Maddox and Lennox, 4, joined him on the course in miniature Masters caddie outfits for the event before his eldest child went and retrieved the ball for him.

And incredibly, on the very next hole Woodland came agonizingly close to making it two career hole-in-ones in the space of minutes.

The former world No. 12 was almost wheeling away in celebration once again, only to have his tee-shot lip out at the very last moment.

Woodland first began showing symptoms of his lesion in the brain back in April 2023, after experiencing tremors and chills while having trouble sleeping.

'It came out of nowhere,' he said in January of the symptoms, which began a few weeks after last year's Masters. 'It was a horrible experience. All you wanted to do was go to sleep to not think about it and going to sleep was the worst part.

'That is where all the seizures were happening. It was a horrible four, five months.'

He added: 'As it got worse, loss of appetite, chills, no energy. It started getting pretty bad to where I was meeting... I have a performance coach, I'm working with her.

It started getting so bad I called my doctor who I've been with for 13 years and I was like, man, I need something to calm me down. Almost anxiety.

An MRI eventually revealed the tumor, but he continued to play golf up until his surgery five months later.

Doctors are believed to have drilled a hole in his skull the size of a baseball, before removing a tumor that proved to be benign.

Woodland returned at Hawaii's Sony Open in January, where he failed to cut. Now the man from Topeka, Kansas, is hoping to build on that at this week's Masters.

'Obviously, it's been a journey,' he said on Tuesday about his recovery. 'It's been a process for the last year. But there's nowhere I'd rather be right now.'
