There’s an unassuming shopfront on Market Place in Hull’s Old Town where, underneath the 1950s-style signs, behind the brass-bound clocks, compasses, barometers and telescopes which jostle for space in the windows, the business of B. Cooke and Son quietly takes place.
Cooke’s has the feeling of a living museum, one of the last vestiges of the city’s nautical past, but while the maritime fortunes of Hull may have changed greatly over
years, there’s a feeling that somehow time stands still at Cooke’s.
That’s Cooke with an ‘e’ - unlike the more famous explorer, Captain James Cook,
also born in Yorkshire - but the name also comes with quite a story…
Barnard Cooke – an optician by trade - clearly had an eye for opportunity. Back in
the 1840s and 50s he’d learned his craft alongside his brother, the renowned clock
maker Thomas Cooke of York. Thomas was a bit of a star – son of a Pocklington
shoemaker, he was a self-taught mathematician and physicist who carved out a
reputation building telescopes, later opening a shop in York, then a factory, as his
reputation as a manufacturer of excellent optical instruments spread around the
world.
Thomas’s younger brother Barnard had been his right-hand man as the business
grew, but by the early 1860s Barnard was ready to strike out on his own.
The first rail links between York and Hull had been established in the 1840s, new
fishing grounds had just been discovered, this is the peak of Victorian prosperity, Hull
was a major trading port with Europe and the city was booming.
Barnard set up shop bang in the centre of town, close to the busy Queens Dock,
where he began to supply the nautical trade with compasses, sextants, barometers,
clocks and telescopes.
B Cooke and Son grew with the city’s fortunes. Solid and reliable, a Cooke compass
became the captain’s choice, synonymous with quality.
Over the years, the business changed hands and moved premises, finally coming to
rest in the mid-1950s in its current location.
Brian Walker is 71 - and still making compasses – but he was just 15 years old in
1968 when he became an apprentice compass maker at Cooke’s.
“Back then the docks were filled with boats.” remembers Brian, “We had a van that
used to go there twice a day and each time he’d come back with a tea chest full of

gauges, sextants, compasses, chronometers, barometers for fixing – we had to sort
them before the ship sailed.
“We had 25 staff – you had the office staff, then the chart department, the gauge
department, the sextant department, then on top of the building was the compass
department.
“You could walk out the door and get anything you needed to do the job – all the
suppliers where there - Humber Rubber, Humber Electricals - there were ship’s
agents, chandlers, shipyards that you were supplying, all that expertise – there was
always somebody behind a counter that would help you.”

Aftermath of huge fire in Linwood. Explosions still being heard.

Massive Linwood fire sends plumes of smoke into the air as health warning issued.

Emergency crews were sent to the scene of a massive fire at an electrical and battery recycling treatment facility in Paisley overnight
Residents in close proximity to a fire that broke out at an electrical and battery recycling treatment facility in Paisley overnight have been urged to remain indoors with windows and doors shut.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said crews were mobilised to the Linwood Industrial Estate just after 9pm on Sunday following reports of a fire in a commercial building on Burnbrae Road.

As many as ten fire appliances worked to tackle the fire overnight, with six appliances and two height vehicles still at the scene at 5.30am.

Video captured from eyewitnesses showed massive plumes of black smoke coming from the site. Such was the scale of the fire the smoke could be seen clearly from Glasgow.

The fire service said there were no reported casualties, but nearby residents should be mindful of smoke.

Area Commander David Murdoch said: “We continue to work with the recycling centre and partner agencies to minimise the disruption to the local community and will continue to provide updates.

“While smoke continues to be visible, we would ask that residents remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution. If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.”

Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) national duty manager Judith Moore said: “Following initial reports at around 11pm on Sunday evening of a significant fire at Linwood Industrial Estate, Paisley, SEPA officers deployed and worked across the night to support SFRS as part of a multi-agency response.

“Sepa officers remain in attendance at the site of WEEE Solutions Ltd, a specialist waste electrical and battery recycling treatment facility at Burnbrae Road, Linwood.

“Residents are urged to continue to follow the SFRS for the latest information and advice. Environmental impacts can be reported at sepa.org.uk/report.”

Waste solutions company Enva said the fire broke out at its Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Solutions e-waste facility and the incident had been contained.

In a statement. Enva said: “We would like to apologise to local residents and businesses for any inconvenience caused and kindly ask them to follow any advice issued by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“There have been no injuries and the cause of the fire will be the subject of an immediate and thorough investigation. We will be contacting any customers impacted as soon as possible to ensure continuity of service.

“Our Linwood general waste recycling facility, whilst unaffected by the fire, will remain closed until the emergency services’ cordon is lifted and operational responsibility for the site is returned to Enva.
Well, as Wolves have recently found struggles with purchasing players in transfer windows, they’ve looked to have made a solid start to proceedings this summer, as whilst the fans face trouble over rising ticket prices, are hoping the quality brought in can somewhat make them justifiable.
