Roseburn Path: The battle over whether an old Edinburgh rail line should become a tram route<br/><br/>Campaign formed to save “nature network” in public consultation that also includes Orchard Brae corridor option<br/><br/>It must be one of Scotland’s most genteel cycle paths, peppered with signs asking riders to dip their lights and be mindful of walkers.<br/><br/>The Roseburn Path in the west of Edinburgh is part of a web of off-road routes through the capital which were created from former railway lines closed 60 years ago.<br/><br/>But the prospect of the iron road returning in the form of a tram line has ignited a campaign to save what supporters cherish as a “nature network”, which is adorned this month with lush vegetation, birdsong and the scent of wild garlic.<br/><br/>The City of Edinburgh Council is to seek views on whether a planned new north-south tram route between Granton and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and beyond should use the path or run along Orchard Brae to the east instead.<br/><br/>Council officials recommended the Roseburn option in February, but councillors decided to take a neutral stance pending the results of a public consultation later this year. The council stressed a path would be retained beside the tram line, but opponents questioned whether that would be either feasible, or attractive to users.<br/><br/>Backers of the Roseburn option argued that it will enable trams to run past the Western General, the city’s other major hospital, with reduced journey times by avoiding congested traffic corridors.<br/><br/>The route also has legislative approval from the Scottish Parliament in 2006 as part of a circular tram line, the northern half of which between Roseburn and Newhaven was later shelved. However, the Save the Roseburn Path campaign, which was formed to fight the new plans, described them as “complete nonsense”.

A MAN claims he has created a car that might solve the world’s traffic congestion problems. Rick Woodbury from Spokane, Washington USA, is the president, founder and sole employee of ‘Commuter Cars.’ The carmaker’s flagship model is the 2005 super slim two-seater Tango T600, a high-performance electric car that preceded Tesla. Rick told us: “I started this company 21 years ago – it was based on an idea that I came up with in 1982.” He was inspired by the shocking traffic congestion he had to face on a daily basis. “I used to drive a Porsche from Beverly Hills to Hermosa Beach every day and the traffic was horrendous,” explained Rick. What really made Rick think about a solution was the fact that in most of the cars he would see in his commute were occupied by lone drivers. “I noticed that everybody around me was a single occupant in a car, taking up the whole lane,” Rick said. Living and working in Los Angeles also helped inspire Rick’s unique creation. “I thought, everyone wants to get from point A to point B efficiently, and in cities like Los Angeles there’s really no centre, there’s no hub, everybody goes everywhere,” explained Rick. For him, there is a simple solution, and that is reducing the width that vehicles take up on the road so that 2 can fit comfortably in a single lane. “I don’t think there’s any other answer except doubling lane capacity,” said Rick. With a length of 102 inches this micro car can be parked just about anywhere, just like you would with a motorbike. Rick said: “The length is the same width of a semi-truck so I can park perpendicular to the curb.”The selling point of this vehicle is that it can drive in-between cars better than any other car. “The coolest feature for me to that it can get through traffic faster than any car in history,” said Rick. Much like a motorbike, the Tango T500 can drive right up to the stop line of traffic lights.

He’s never tried to jump out - he&#39;s gotten so used to riding now he rides partially with his front paws on my back rest to see over my shoulder. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;“He’s a good rider, he knows how to shift his weight and he’s pretty amazing.” &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;Joe, wife Penny, 60, and their two daughters adopted Oreo from the local humane society after Joe provided volunteer welding services.&#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;Abbey, 18 and sister Erin, 21, chose the pup – who they believe is a black Lab and weiner dog mix – and Joe says he had his doubts initially. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;But Oreo quickly won him round and now the pair are inseparable.&#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;Battery technician Joe bought his Harley Road King brand new in 2003 for £20k and says he’s owned bikes since he was 12. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;Joe and Oreo ride from spring to autumn – with Joe saying they’re on the bike “full time”. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;“Every time I take him out, I’m surprised it hasn’t caused a car crash, people are so distracted,” said Joe. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;“He just wants to do anything I&#39;m doing. If I climb into a go-kart or anything the dog wants some of that. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;“Most girls will say &#39;that&#39;s the cutest thing I&#39;ve ever seen in my life&#39; - my standard answer is &#39;why thank you, but what do you think of the dog&#39;. &#60;br/&#62;&#60;br/&#62;“I can walk out into the garage and bump the starter on the Harley and that dog will come running down the hallway every time - it&#39;s the funniest thing to see.”
