_former-wales-rugby-star-james-hook-completes-100-mile-hike-from-tenby-to-mumbles-for-wales-air-ambulance.webp "Former Wales and British and Irish Lions rugby international James Hook has completed his 100-mile hike for the lifesaving Wales Air Ambulance charity, after setting off from the seaside town of Tenby to take on ‘Hooky’s Hike’.<br/>James has a personal connection to the Wales Air Ambulance after they saved the life of his youngest son, Harrison, and became an ambassador for the lifesaving service back in 2021.<br/>After seeing the Charity’s appeal for supporters to join their annual fundraiser, Walk Wales, which coincides with the Charity marking 50,000 missions, the Welsh Great decided to take on his own version of the event – Hooky’s Hike which saw James tackle 100 miles over five days this month, aiming to ‘raise awareness and funds’ for the Charity.<br/>James said: “The Wales Air Ambulance Charity is incredibly close to mine and my family’s heart. On the day that I proposed to my wife, Kim, they flew to the aid of my son who was just a baby at the time. They’re about to embark on 50,000 missions, and my son is one of them.<br/>“I have been an ambassador for a few years now, and this is my opportunity to give something back through raising awareness and funds.<br/>“I really hope that we can raise a lot of money in the process, and that the public will support my challenge because you never know when you or your family may need the Charity’s help.<br/>The Charity hopes that James’ epic challenge will encourage supporters to take part in their own Walk Wales event.<br/>Walk Wales is an annual fundraiser which allows participants to walk, jog or run, different distances each year, whilst raising funds. This year, to mark the milestone of 50,000 missions, the Charity is asking supporters to walk, run or jog 50 miles throughout the month of June.<br/>James started his challenge at the Wales Air Ambulance Charity shop in Tenby on Upper Frog Street on June 4, and headed towards Laugharne to complete day one.<br/>On day two he left Laugharne to Kidwelly; and then onto Llanelli the following day. <br/>Day four saw Jame hike to Rhossili; before his last 20-mile stretch on the last day of the challenge saw him walk to the seaside village of Mumbles.<br/>Welsh Air Ambulance crew members and a few past patients too, joined him along the way!")

_race-to-get-coppet-hall-to-wisemans-bridge-route-open-before-summer-holidays.webp "Work is progressing to reopen the landslide-hit coastal tunnels connecting Coppet Hall to Wisemans Bridge.<br/>The popular path has been closed since the turn of the year and sectioned off by Pembrokeshire County Council for safety reasons, after being hit by a series of landslips.<br/>The aim is to get the tunnels that adjoin Saundersfoot with its neighbouring seaside village of Wisemans Bridge back open by the start of the summer holidays, although this is dependent on a number of factors.<br/>The contract for the cliff stabilisation works was awarded to iBEX Technical Access who have extensive experience of this type of work and have worked in the Saundersfoot area previously. <br/>“It is envisaged work will be completed and the path reopened around July 12. This date is provisional, and subject to satisfactory progress of work being achieved,” said a spokesperson for the Local Authority.<br/>PCC highway infrastructure engineer Neil Morgan remarked: “Works are going well on site. There is a lot more loose rock to the face of the cliffs which requires removal but this should not cause too much of an issue.<br/>“We have had an issue with settlement of the sea wall backfill material nearer Wisemans Bridge causing a hole in the path. This is a result of coastal erosion to the seawall which will be repaired this week.<br/>“We are still working towards opening the tunnels on July 12, this is however, as always, dependent on many factors.”<br/>Saundersfoot county councillor for the south ward Cllr Chris Williams, who has been keen to ensure that the tunnels are reopened ahead of the summer season, to benefit local businesses, residents and visitors alike, said: “It is great to see works going ahead at the tunnels recently and was lovely to have a quick catch up with the contractors while I had a meeting at Coppet Hall.<br/>“Works are progressing well on site and there is a lot more loose rock on the cliffs that requires removal. This should not cause too much of an issue. <br/>“A lot of time has been spent clearing away all the loose materials and an area at the top of the cliff has been cleared because it was overhanging. This has meant that some trees have had to be taken down and it has left an incredible view from this area.<br/>“Once these works are completed, they will then work on the area near Wisemans Bridge that will also need clearing and making safe. <br/>“There has been additional works planned due to an issue with settlement of the sea wall backfill material nearer Wisemans Bridge, causing a hole in the path. This is a result of coastal erosion to the seawall, that will be repaired next week.”")

_watch-graffiti-artist-put-finishing-touch-to-dylan-thomas-at-tenby39s-oldest-pub.webp "Pembrokeshire artist Lloyd the Graffiti has been putting his finishing touches to another masterpiece - this time paying homage to one of Wales' most famous sons - poet Dylan Thomas - at the Coach and Horses Tavern - Tenby’s oldest pub, where as legend would have it, the prodigious boozer visited and became so drunk that he left behind his manuscript of Under Milk Wood on a bar stool!<br/>The pub located on Tenby’s cobbled Upper Frog Street was visited by Thomas, in 1953 when Mr. Ceslie Stock was the landlord. <br/>The poet called at the pub after giving a reading to the local art club an excerpt from his recently completed play for voices ‘Under Milk Wood’ - and the story goes that Thomas became so inebriated that when he finally staggered out of the inn, he left his only copy of the play’s manuscript on a seat in the bar!<br/>While Thomas visited Tenby, his enduring connection to the town was through his friendship with painter Augustus John, who he was close to throughout his life. <br/>John was responsible for introducing Thomas to his future wife Caitlin MacNamara in a London pub who, despite being involved with John at the time, quickly became enamoured with the poet and the pair started a passionate affair.<br/>One of Thomas’ final performances took place in the seaside town, was indeed when he turned up fashionably late to The Salad Bowl (a venue on The Croft that is now gone but has a blue plaque in its place) when Thomas delivered one of the only readings of Under Milk Wood. <br/>Sadly, there would be no opportunity for an encore since Thomas passed away in New York only five short weeks later. <br/>The Coach and Horses has long carried a mural on the side of its premises of distinctive Dylan Thomas, but now Lloyd the Graffiti who hails from Haverfordwest and whose body of work across the county is building and building - has given the drinking establishment and restaurant a fresh new version, and after finishing his latest creation, Lloyd stated: “Well that’s me ready for a Guinness!”<br/>")
