_thousands-enjoy-rnli-lifeboat-festival-at-pembroke-castle-marking-charitys-200th-anniversary.webp "On Father’s Day, more than 1,650 people descended on Pembroke Castle for a day of family fun, to mark 200 years of saving lives at sea for the RNLI.<br/>The medieval venue played host to the RNLI’s Lifeboat Festival and opened its gates for the public to meet local lifesavers and have fun while learning how to stay safe in the water with the RNLI Water Safety team.<br/>Revellers enjoyed live music from Goodwick Brass Band, Henry Tudor School (Ysgol Harri Tudur) who showcased highlights from their upcoming performance of Peter Pan, Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir, shanty band Cockles and Mussels, Tenby Male Voice Choir, folk rockers Razor Bill, and Calico Jack.<br/>The RNLI has been saving lives at sea for more than 200 years, in which time its volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved 146,452 lives – this equates to an average of two lives saved every day for 200 years.<br/>The charity was founded in a London tavern on 4 March 1824 following an appeal from Sir William Hillary, who lived on the Isle of Man and witnessed many shipwrecks, the RNLI has continued saving lives at sea throughout the tests of its history, including tragic disasters, funding challenges and two World Wars.<br/>Two centuries have seen vast developments in the lifeboats and kit used by the charity’s lifesavers – from the early oar-powered vessels to today’s technology-packed boats, which are now built in-house by the charity; and from the rudimentary cork lifejackets of the 1850s to the full protective kit each crew member is now issued with.<br/>The RNLI’s lifesaving reach and remit has also developed over the course of 200 years. Today, it operates 238 lifeboat stations, including four on the River Thames, and has seasonal lifeguards on over 240 lifeguarded beaches around the UK and Ireland. It designs and builds its own lifeboats and runs domestic and international water safety programmes.<br/>While much has changed in 200 years, two things have remained the same – the charity’s dependence on volunteers, who give their time and commitment to save others, and the voluntary contributions from the public which have funded the service for the past two centuries.<br/>")

_long-course-weekend-returns-to-tenby-and-surrounding-areas-this-weekend.webp "The Long Course Weekend returns to south Pembrokeshire this weekend with some road disruption anticipated - Pembrokeshire County Council has stated.<br/>As part of the triathlon, which begins on Friday evening (June 21) with the swim on Tenby’s North Beach; competitors take on the Wales Sportive cycle ride the following day, with full rolling road closures; before Sunday’s marathon closes the event.<br/>As in previous years, the Local Authority has stated it will be necessary to introduce a number of traffic restrictions on the Saturday and Sunday to enable both the sportive and marathon to take place in a safe environment.<br/>The Croft and a section of the Norton (White Lion Street to The Croft) will also be temporarily closed on the Friday evening between 4.30 and 6.30 pm, in the interest of public safety due to possible thronging of spectators watching the swim event. Access to properties on The Croft will be managed.<br/>Following the success of last year, the start and finish on both Saturday and Sunday is from the Salterns car park in Tenby (rather than the centre of the seaside town in Tudor Square) which has removed road closure restriction from the town centre.<br/>A number of roads around the wider Tenby area will be closed or closed one way during the Wales Sportive on Saturday, June 22.<br/>The A40 and A477 are not closed for the event. ![With reports of members of the public being hit with hefty fines for breaching dog ban byelaws on some of the county’s beaches in recent weeks, many are asking if the restrictions are somewhat draconian for a place that is portrayed as ‘Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire’ to holidaymakers and residents...or are the Council justified in preventing areas such as Tenby’s Castle Beach becoming a ‘Crufts’ like show for the summer season.<br/>Anyone planning to take their four-legged friends along to the seaside have been reminded that seasonal dog restrictions are now in place on some Pembrokeshire beaches between May 1 and September 30.<br/>While many beaches welcome dogs all year around, between these dates total dog bans are in place at Tenby’s North beach and Whitesands; while partial dog bans cover Lydstep, Newgale beach and pebble bank, Coppet Hall (voluntary), Saundersfoot beach, Tenby Castle and South Beach, Amroth, Poppit Sands, Broad Haven North and Dale.<br/>The dog bans are subject to enforcement with a maximum penalty of £500 for breaches of the bylaws.<br/>Since the restrictions came into place on May 1 many dog owners have been hit with Fixed Penalty Notices, with WISE enforcement wardens employed by PCC to tackle a range of environmental crimes, now also tasked with patrolling beaches for such breaches.<br/>Saundersfoot county councillor Chris Williams has been working with holiday accommodation agencies, businesses and bars that have access to the main beach to make them aware of the restrictions that started on May 1.<br/>“I feel that making people aware of the enforcement is a positive step and enforcement should only be used if people continue to abuse the rules,” he said.<br/>“It has been unfortunate that individuals continue to ignore the ban and this is a very small minority of dog owners who let the majority down. <br/>“Last week I was contacted by a local resident who received a ticket for walking her dog along the shoreline. <br/>“I would clarify with reference to the Council’s plans [information boards] showing the beach restricted areas - unlike a land plan, which has fixed boundaries, the boundaries of a beach can change with the tide.
