_otd-in-space-may-16-space-shuttle-endeavour-launches-on-final-flight.webp "On May 16, 2011, the space shuttle Endeavour launched on its 25th and final flight. <br/><br/>This was also the penultimate mission of the entire shuttle program. Five NASA astronauts and one Italian astronaut made up the STS-134 crew. They launched from Kennedy Space Center and spent nearly 16 days in orbit. The first two days were spent catching up to the International Space Station. When they got there, they dropped of a bunch of science experiments and other supplies. They also did four spacewalks to install new equipment outside of the space station and do some other routine maintenance. Endeavour’s primary payload was the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a particle physics experiment that would study cosmic radiation and look for antimatter and dark matter. They also installed new external sensors to help future missions dock there. Over the course of this mission, Endeavour clocked more than 6 million miles. The shuttle traveled more than 122 million miles over the course of its 19 years in service. After it retired, it was moved to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.")

_otd-in-space-may-15-last-flight-of-nasa39s-mercury-program.webp "On May 15, 1963, NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper launched on the sixth and final crewed flight of the Mercury Program. <br/><br/>This was also the last time a NASA astronaut launched on a solo mission to space. Cooper lifted off from Cape Canaveral on an Atlas rocket booster. He rode inside a capsule called Faith 7, which he piloted for 22 orbits around the Earth. The entire mission lasted 34 hours and 20 minutes and was the longest flight of the Mercury program. Cooper performed 11 experiments in orbit. One of them involved deploying a flashing ball in space and tracking it. Cooper also became the first person to sleep in space. When it came time to head home, Faith 7 started having some problems. It started giving faulty readings, and NASA decided that the auto-pilot system could not longer be trusted. So, Cooper had to pilot it manually. This made him the first astronaut manually fly a space capsule for the entire reentry process. Not only was his landing smooth, but it was also the most accurate landing in the history of the Mercury program. He splashed down just 4 miles away from the recovery ship that was waiting for him in the Pacific Ocean.")
_young-women-of-wales-raise-their-voices-for-peace.webp "Today (Friday 17 May 2024), Wales’ largest youth organisation, Urdd Gobaith Cymru continues the 102-year tradition of sharing an annual Peace and Goodwill Message by the young people of Wales with the world, by releasing ‘Gweithred yw Gobaith – Hope is an Action’ in a striking animated film.<br/><br/>Since 1922, the young people of Wales have thrown a spotlight on themes that are important to them whilst sharing a message of peace with the world. Every May a message has been shared without fail, initially through Morse code, then through the BBC World Service and more recently through digital media. Last year’s anti-racism Peace Message was seen by millions in 50 countries and supported by celebrities and hundreds of schools across Wales and beyond.<br/><br/>2024’s Peace Message honours the legacy of the Welsh Women’s Peace Petition of 1923-1924, signed by 400,000 women across Wales (said to be 7 miles in length). The Message states that “the challenge of our century’s next chapter” is the continuing need to advocate for peace and putting an end to atrocities, wars, and violence.<br/><br/>The young women responsible for creating this year’s Peace Message are Cardiff and Vale ESOL students (English for Speakers of Other Languages) who have found refuge and made Wales their home along with some of the Urdd’s female staff, apprentices, and volunteers.<br/><br/>First Minister Vaughan Gething said: “I am incredibly proud to support the Urdd’s message of peace and goodwill, which is of great significance all over the world. The message is a true reflection of the ambitions of young people in Wales and a call to action for world leaders, with the collective aim to strive for a better future for us all.
