Description:
A shop manager quit her job to resell second-hand clothing - and now makes up to $5k-a-month.

Stephanie Thornsburg, 43, ran a thrift shop for 16 years - before turning her side hustle of selling her old clothes online into a full-time career.

She started off listing the clothes in her wardrobe - but now makes a living buying and selling second-hand items.

As well as being able to pay herself a salary, Stephanie also uses it to support her two children, 23 and 18, with her husband, Luke, 44, a configuration lead.

Stephanie, from Cincinnati, Ohio, US, said: “I make money by spending time digging and finding the treasures - then putting them on the second-hand market.

“I was ready to be my own boss, too - really take the leap.

“I managed other people for 16 years, after a while, it gets a little overwhelming.

“Now, I’ve never been happier - I’m helping promote slow fashion and I have so much free time on my hands.”

The mum-of-two has always worked in the second-hand industry.

She was the first person to open up a “bricks-and-mortar buy-and-sell store” in her area.

Stephanie managed the shop for 16 years and often felt she had to give up her free time to help out.

“My kids were eight months and five years old at the time,” she said.

“I started out as a store manager - and ended up working my way to district manager.

“When you’re manager, you’re the one who has to end up going in and taking care of things.

“I had to come in on so many of my days off, and work lots of overtime.

“Even if I wasn’t at work, you still get phone calls, and you’re still needed.

“You’d be getting questions at any time of the day.

“I also had some crazy emergencies - like a kid once accidentally crashing his car into the front of our store.”

Other full-time clothing resellers would often come to Stephanie’s shop for “inventory” - which inspired her to make the transition.

She said: “Resellers would particularly come to our women’s and designer stores.

“People bought our stuff to try and sell it on and make some money.

“It piqued my interest that people can do this all by themselves - they don’t have to work for someone.”

In 2020, Stephanie started selling the clothes in her wardrobe as a side hustle - before branching out to other products bought at second-hand shops.

It took her four years to make enough money to replace her nine-to-five income.

She initially started out making $1k profit per month, and now has a turnover of $60k-a-year.

“The trick is to learn which brands sell well,” she said.

“The money comes in when you figure out what those pieces are.

“Size is a huge component for me.

“The average size of a woman in the US is a 16, so I often find sizes 10 and up perform the best.

“It took me a full year to profit $1k to $2k-a-month doing this as a side-hustle - now, it’s $4k to $5k.

“I’ve been able to make what I was making at my old job - but I’m my own boss, and continuing to grow.”

Stephanie said her best-selling brands often “shock” friends who ask - as they’re all on the high street.

She said: “It’s stuff people wear every day - but the top three brands are J-Crew, Madewell and Athleta.

“My top seller has to be a J-Crew cashmere sweater, they always do really well.”

The thrifter has much more time on her hands since she started working for herself - and now her kids are grown up, she invests that time on herself.

She spends her free hours coaching others on reselling full-time - as well as filming training videos.

“My son’s a full-time nurse,” she said.

“And my daughter is 18.

“I don’t have little kids anymore, so I can use my free time on myself.

“Reselling used to be my hobby - but now I spend time putting together coaching videos.

“I have a training background - and have learnt so much from reselling, I thought I’d share my journey.”

ONE man has spent five years, and thousands of dollars, single-handedly recreating the iconic Warthog truck from the Halo video games. Bryant Havercamp, a phone technician from Michigan, built the incredibly-detailed replica completely by himself, using traditional fabrication methods, a 3D printer, and the frame of a 1984 Chevy K10. The fully street-legal recreation is based on a 3D model extracted directly from the Halo game, allowing Bryant to match the truck’s measurements to the in-game version. Bryant told Barcroft Media: “Most people when they see this thing are just absolutely floored with how realistic it looks.\

The owners of the car park at Coppet Hall beach have moved to clarify concerns around the operation of the facility - but admit that they will now be working with an enforcement company - after instances of people who refused to pay to park becoming ‘rude and aggressive’ towards attendants when challenged.
The Hean Castle Estate has stated it wanted to bring an end to ‘ensuing speculation’ over comments on social media that included ‘serious inaccuracies and assumptions’.
Saundersfoot harbour commission recently received a backlash from members of the public for using the company Britannia Parking to utilise ANPR cameras at the seaside car park, operating 24 hours a day.
A spokesperson for the Hean Castle Estate stated that a new ANPR system is due to be installed before the summer: “The current system has had an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) facility since it was installed, which notified the attendants of visitors who hadn’t purchased a ticket on a previous visit.
“We have always tried to be pleasant and polite with our printed notices that were put on cars who hadn’t paid, and often received positive feedback from people who had made a genuine mistake or the ticket wasn’t in view.
“Our primary requirements for the new system were for it to be user friendly, yet be able to issue Penalty Charge Notices to people who didn’t purchase a ticket or overstayed, and also to be able to give us control over the penalty ticketing process.
“Unfortunately, there have always been a small number of people who have refused to pay to park, and in many cases were rude and aggressive towards the attendants when challenged.
“In the last couple of years, the number of people not paying has increased, and the rudeness has reached an intolerable level.
“As a result, we have partnered with an enforcement company who will be able to raise Parking Charge notices against people who refuse to pay - and thus avoid the unpleasantness which has been forthcoming.”
The new system at Coppet Hall will operate from 8am to 7pm, with parking remaining free outside these times.
There will be a 15 minute ‘grace period’ which will be clearly signposted at the entrance.
“The Estate Office will have access to the ANPR system, so details of vehicles entering and leaving the site will be able to be checked, and in the case of genuine claims for errors, tickets cancelled,” they added.
A couple take their pet parrots to the shops, opticians, supermarket, Chinese takeaway - and the pub.

Anne Spider-McKeown, 64, and partner Spider Spider, 66, who changed his name by deed poll to reflect his love of animals, rescued three Macaws in early 2020.

The trio – Chester and bonded pair Charlie and Elwood – were initially adopted by Anne and Spider after they had to give up their motorbike hobby after coming down with Covid in January 2020.

Sadly, Macaw Elwood, who was disabled and looked after by Charlie, passed away in July last year.

Chester had bonded with Anne, and after Elwood’s death Spider says he became better friends with Charlie.

Charlie doesn’t fly, as Elwood couldn’t fly and Charlie would look after the fellow bird – but since Elwood’s death, the couple have been trying to help him find his wings.

Now, Anne and Spider are regularly spotted out and about with the parrots – going to the supermarket, B&Q and even the local pub together.

Spider, from Birmingham, said: “Whenever we go pub for lunch with the birds, we always take them.

“Going out with them turns any shopping trip about three times longer – we don’t mind though, we love people asking questions, it’s great to interact with people.

“It’s an eye-opener for people, lots of people are gobsmacked that the birds are real and I'm not walking around with a stuffed parrot on my shoulder.

“Anne loves birds and always wanted a blue and gold Macaw since being a child, so we thought we could rehome a couple as a new hobby.

“It's like having two three-year-old kids in the house.

“Charlie used to come with us to all sorts of places and then a bit later we decided we would harness train Chester so he could have same element of freedom.

“Generally, they’re very happy to interact with people, when they’re both in the right mood they’ll let strangers give them treats – people are surprised they’re so gentle with their big beaks.”

The retired couple have made some changes to their garden to accommodate the birds, installing a huge bird net nine feet high outside.

They say they wanted to make sure the parrots could have some freedom, so they let them out into the garden under supervision.

Spider says the birds have big personalities – and says Chester is very protective of Anne, even telling Spider off if he goes near her.

And he says he’s been amazed by Charlie’s changed personality – saying the relationship between human and bird is like human and child.

Spider said: “When we lost Elwood, Charlie very distraught so i Ia lot of work into letting him know he had a friend in me.

“Now Charlie has become my best pal. Charlie says hello, hello Charlie and will sing in his own way which is something he never did before.

“Chester will talk more readily than Charlie, when the phone rings Chester is the first to say hello.

“We have a lot of fun with them, they’re loveable characters.”
