While the Lamborghini Gallardo was launched in 2003, causing a stir with its guttural new V10 engine and comprising a second super sports model line for Automobili Lamborghini, in London’s East End recording engineer Liam Watson and American rock duo The White Stripes were also loudly making history.<br/><br/>As music enthusiasts around the world prepare to celebrate Record Store Day on 20 April 2024, this Lamborghini video captures the spirit of Hackney, its edgy music scene and a hotbed of creativity. In this industrial landscape that was witnessing the start of construction in preparation for the 2012 Olympics, British producer Liam had set up Toe Rag Studios in 1991 where, instead of harnessing the latest digital technology, he adopted analogue four-track tape machines and pre-60s recording gear. The emotive, tangible feel of analogue recording also appealed to The White Stripes, aka Jack and Meg White, who Liam met while performing gigs at London’s iconic The 100 Club.

_honda-showcases-vision-for-more-sustainable-product-design-at-milan-design-week.webp "Honda is showcasing its evolving approach to more sustainable product design with the European premiere of its latest electrified urban vehicle concepts – the SUSTAINA-C Concept car and Pocket Concept motorcycle – at Milan Design Week from 16-21 April.<br/><br/>Both will star alongside the SH125i ‘Vetro’ scooter to demonstrate the innovative material use and unique design aesthetics that can be created while reducing the CO2 emissions arising from the manufacturing process at Honda Italia Industriale’s factory in Atessa, Italy. This is one way in which Honda is pursuing its target of achieving carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050.<br/><br/>As first shown at the 2024 Japan Mobility Show, the SUSTAINA-C Concept explores how society could be freed from the constraints of finite resources. It comes paired with the Pocket Concept, a compact motorcycle that can be stored in the luggage compartment and provide last mile mobility.<br/><br/>The panels are manufactured using recycled acrylic resin sourced from second-hand taillights to create exterior panels that do not require painting, allowing Honda to create a unique, unpainted finish that would not be possible with traditional materials. This material approach could reduce emissions during production by up to 45 per cent – partly via the recycled materials in use, but also in leaving the panels unpainted, which can account for as much as 80 per cent of the CO2 emissions from an automobile factory.<br/><br/>The model on show in Milan features a black and white marble effect, achieved by mixing colours with different melting points into the panels as they are moulded – leaving a marbling behind as the material settles into the mould.")

With a starting price tag of over $1M, the monster-sized vehicle can even come provided with an optional bullet proof exterior. Intentionally designed asymmetrical, the sport utility vehicle has what the creator calls the ‘diamond design’. Designer Luciano D’Ambrosio says inspiration was drawn from the Batmobile that featured in The Dark Knight trilogy. Luciano told R.Rides: “When you’re in this business for so many years you think, how about being a little different, especially exaggerated. The maverick designer threw the engineering manual out when envisioning the look for the Karlmann King. Multiple protruding surfaces making up its idiosyncratic look - the car is a spectacle to look at when it’s on the road. He said: “Going opposite to what the design rules would usually ask you for, it’s called the diamond design.” Although the car has been designed to be domineering and big, Luciano is quick to point out the car shouldn’t be seen as too aggressive. The construction of the car is comprised of a shell built and overlapped a Ford F550 chassis, but its unique design doesn’t stop there. For the more discerning customer the car is almost fully customisable. Under the bonnet the car boasts a Ford 6.7l V10 engine giving off 420 horsepower and, despite its mammoth shape, provides a smooth drive on the roads. The top speed of the vehicle is 220 km/h. Luciano said: “Given the size of the car you can imagine you’re driving an elephant but it’s a very flexible and nice drive.” Although its starting price begins at a cool $1,085,000, for a more bespoke design and with its customisable extras the vehicle can cost up to $3,800,000. “My most favourite thing is the way people look at the car, it doesn’t go unseen,’ said Luciano.")
