GLASGOW. <br/><br/>Glasgow is set to host Scotland’s biggest week of bagpipes this summer, with the return of Piping Live! from Saturday 10th - Sunday 18th August, and The World Pipe Band Championships on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th August.<br/><br/>To mark the launch of these world-renowned events, renowned bagpiper and BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2023 finalist Ailis Sutherland, Croft No. Five drummer Paul Jennings and celebrated piper, composer and teacher John Mulhearn, alongside World Pipe Band Championships competitor Emma Hill - who is competing with the Glasgow Skye Association Pipe Band in Grade 2 this year - all performed at the front of Saint Lukes in the east end of the city. A new venue for Piping Live! 2024. <br/><br/>The world’s biggest piping festival, Piping Live! attracts over 30,000 attendees to Glasgow each year, with an eclectic programme of events for pipers and music lovers alike to be held at venues across the city.<br/><br/>The World Pipe Band Championships – a major event which Glasgow first hosted in 1948 and the city has staged every year since 1986 – attracts thousands of pipers and drummers from all over the world to compete in the ultimate ‘battle of the bands’.

And now, he has announced the completion of the first phase of a multi-million pound refurbishment programme of the first bar in his extensive portfolio which he opened a decade ago.<br/><br/>The Whitefort has been completely transformed with the £1.5m investment spanning over two floors. The refreshed interior design was developed by hospitality design specialists O’Donnell O’Neill who have helped to reinvent the spaces to present an entirely new customer experience. <br/><br/>The ground floor has been opened up and now includes an extensive island bar, cocktail bar, restaurant booth seating and staging area for live entertainment. Whilst the second floor is now a contemporary sports bar with 11 pool tables, three interactive dart boards, a media wall for live sports, a premier area for private events accommodating from 10 – 200 people and further staging area. Outside boasts a new sun terrace for al fresco dining.<br/><br/>An exciting new food menu using the best of local ingredients has been created by head chef, David Donnelly. A new pouring partnership has been agreed with Molson Coors expanding the drinks offering to include Coors light, Madri, Carling, Rebel Red, Well Hazy, Punk IPA and Rekorderlig Cider.")

_iconic-linlithgow-spire-is-gleaming-golden-once-again-following-400000-restoration.webp "<br/>An iconic church spire in Linlithgow, West Lothian, is once again gleaming golden following successful completion of a £400k restoration project that has saved it from potential collapse.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>The Crown of Thorns spire of St Michael’s Parish Church – a unique and eye-catching piece of public sculpture, visible from both the M9 and the Edinburgh-Glasgow train line – has undergone thorough refurbishment to repair extensive rot in its structural timbers and replace the external cladding. The new cladding, a bronze alloy, returns the spire’s colour to the golden glow of the original structure when erected in 1964. This time, however, the gold is here to stay, aided by modern sealing technology designed to keep the Scottish weather at bay for decades to come.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>Retired architect Brian Lightbody, who led the project, said “From investigative surveys, we knew that the timber structure under the external cladding had been badly affected by water ingress. But the extent of the damage uncovered as all the old cladding was removed has demonstrated that the only alternative to major restoration would have been removal of the entire Crown – in itself a demanding and costly project, and a deeply unattractive prospect for funders.")
