Description:
Walking to the first interview for this project, I noticed a young boy sitting on a wall a few roads down from my north London flat. He had his head in his hands and his body shook gently, quiet sobs erupting as his feet dangled above the ground. Opposite him lay a sea of flowers, some wilting, others fresh, weather-worn cards, their rain-defeated ink fading into illegibility and candles laid out to form the initials ‘JH’. When I came back home five hours later, he was still there. It’s a memorial Londoners have walked past countless times since it appeared in early January, at the site where 24-year-old Jonah Ho-Shue was stabbed to death. He was the first person to be killed on London’s streets this year.Around the capital, it is not uncommon to see shrines like this — tributes to lives cut tragically short. In many ways, knife crime is a hyper-visible problem in London. It is a fear which can sometimes lie dormant, and then be lit ablaze when a particularly senseless tragedy hits the headlines, such as the killing of 15-year-old schoolgirl Elianne Andam, or 16-year-old Harry Pitman at the end of last year.Until 2016, youth violence in the capital was widely understood to be falling — down from a peak in 2009. Then the numbers started climbing again. The 2020 lockdown seemed to provide some respite, as rates of stabbings decreased for the first time in half a decade, but knife crime in London has risen each year since the pandemic, with a 22 per cent increase in Met Police recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument in the last year (up to September 2023).

A woman who almost died trying to cure her cancer with a juice diet has warned others against “cutting out” traditional medical advice and trying to source alternative information online.Medics tried to get Irena Stoynova to use conventional cancer treatments after she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in June 2021, but she “shut them out”.The former model said instead of chemotherapy, she sought alternatives online and took the advice of a man who has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, and claims the human body can “heal itself” with help of radical lifestyle and diet changes.Doctors said she was on the verge of death when she was taken to Frimley Park Hospital by ambulance in May last year, where she finally agreed to receive chemotherapy.

Fed-up locals living next to a historic Shakespeare property say their lives have been made “hell” by drug dealers and anti-social yobs.

Residents on South Green Drive in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warks., say they are too scared to leave their homes after dark.

The leafy street - where house prices average £406,000 - is close to Anne Hathaway's Cottage, the wife of William Shakespeare.

Residents living on the road were too scared to be named fearing reprisals, but say their lives have become “miserable”.

One woman, who has lived on the road for 50 years, said: “It’s quite frightening when you see cars full of big men sitting in the street.

“We have had drug dealers move in next door and you get these big burly blokes coming in and out at all times of the day and night.

“You’ve got to pretend that you don’t see it. You see the younger dealers buzzing around the area too.

“They tend to go in next to the children's play area so they are not overlooked by people's homes.

“You also get kids aged 14 and 15 coming up in the holidays and throwing stones at people’s windows.

“Talking to the police, it’s obvious they can’t cope. It’s the County Lines drug gangs who are operating here.

“We live in one of the most beautiful towns in the country, yards away from Anne Hathaway’s famous cottage, but our lives are miserable.”

Another young mum, who moved to the street six years ago, said: “When I first moved here it was older, retired people.

“It was beautiful and people would be out making their gardens look nice.

“Then a housing association took over a few properties and young people moved in and then came the drugs.

“We had people move in next door to me who were obviously dealing drugs.

“I’d lose count of how many times I saw the police round there.

“The area is falling apart and people who used to stop for a chat now lock themselves in their homes. It’s sad really but the criminals have won.”

Other residents say the estate often organised community barbecues and street sales but that had all come to an end.

One said: “People just aren’t interested any more.

“I’ve tried to organise barbecues and this and that people just keep themselves to themselves now.

“I feel for one couple near me, they have two young children and they have to walk past a known drug den to take their kids to school.

“I can pick a druggie out really well. You just get used to it, it’s normal now.

“I’ve had plain clothed police officers sat in front of my drive, just watching them.

“I've seen armed police come and raid homes. It’s a weekly occurrence.

“These men just park outside across people’s driveways, they do their drug deals and go. They don’t care who they upset. They’re scary men.

“You can tell they’re dodgy, something isn’t right. It’s all since the buildings were taken over and given to younger people.

\
