Motorists using Saundersfoot harbour’s car park have shared their anger at being caught out by the facility’s new ANPR camera system, which is operating 24 hours a day, with many also highlighting confusion over a grace period for those entering the area
Drivers entering the seaside car park have been warned to be on the watch out if they’re thinking of pulling up to enjoy the seaside view for a short while, as a newly introduced enforcement system in operation, could see them caught out with a £100 fine, with parking enforcement now undertaken and managed by Britannia Parking.
“There is a new system in operation and if you’re using the car park, please make sure you purchase a ticket!” warned county councillor for the village’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams recently.
Anyone issued with a fine has the option to raise a dispute or any mitigating circumstances with the firm directly, with contact details for Britannia Parking included on each of the enforcement signs around the car park.
However, many boat users have queried whether there is a grace period to gain access to their moorings. Some have sought clarification to be told by harbour staff that it is 20 minutes, whilst others insist that if your vehicle enters the car park for longer than 10 minutes, without purchasing a ticket, you will receive notice of a hefty fine in the post.
“I have asked more than once for a simple answer to a simple question - how long is the ‘grace period’ the harbour has agreed with the parking company so we can all know if you have one minute to drop or collect someone for work or if you have five?” one local resident posted on Facebook.
“What about guests driving to the marine centre to drop off their luggage when they check in. The charge is to ‘use the car park’ even if you don’t park.
“That’s what will make the company thousands of pounds this summer and ruin a lot of holidays when visitors receive their surprise ticket or tickets on returning home.
“Anyone launching boats, fuelling boats, collecting trailers, dropping off kayaks, picking up workers at the end of the day etc are all money making opportunities with this new charge.
“I feel most for the older people or those with mobility issues who drive down late in the evening and purchase fish and chips - to take away. They now have to pay to park. It’s all just an opportunity for money now. Greed!”

Tenby Town Council are pushing forward with plans to develop a venue’s vacant cafe into a ‘Community Hub’.
Plans for what will feature at the hub, which will occupy the empty premises at the front of the De Valence Pavilion on Upper Frog Street, are sketchy, but the Town Clerk has said that the planned facility will introduce some essential services for the community.
In the Town Council’s annual report for 2023/24 under the ‘plans for the future’ banner, it states that one of the key focuses will be on delivering a ‘front facing office’ to meet the needs of the community.
As part of this plan, the Town Council has been progressing plans to make its own office more accessible by relocating within the existing De Valence building, by creating a welcoming community hub.
Details have been sketchy over what exactly the hub will feature, with recent discussions involving councillors and representatives from the De Valence CIC trust being taken behind closed doors, due to the ‘disclosure of commercially sensitive information’ according to the Town Council’s recent agendas.
The Town Clerk Andrew Davies told the Observer: “The council have been working closely with social and commercial partners to provide a multi-purpose Community Hub that will benefit both residents and visitors to Tenby.
“This initiative will provide better public access to council staff, improved public and working space and some additional essential services for the Town.
“Plans are at a mature but sensitive stage at the moment and final agreements have not yet been completed. Until then it is in the interests of all partners that details remain embargoed.
“However, rest assured that the Council are working hard to close negotiations as quickly as practicable and look forward to providing you and the public with more details in the near future.
“We cannot provide you with a more accurate timeline at the moment as we are beholden to various solicitors for the completion of legal drafting.”
Speculation has mounted that the new hub could include some form of banking services for the seaside town, after the news that the last bank in Tenby HSBC would be closing, with a confirmation date now given as August.
County councillor for the South ward Cllr Sam Skyrme-Blackhall announced over a year ago now that she was in ‘discussions’ that could lead to new banking services for Tenby.
She said revealed at the time that talks were ‘ongoing’ - but the scheme she said was ‘backed by a major player in the market’ could see a new service open in Tenby that would also provide access to cash and deposit services for businesses and new banking services for the whole community.
Since then however Tenby Post Office has stepped-up to fill the banking void for the town, offering a comprehensive list of vital business and personal banking services available to the community, seven-days-a-week.
The De Valence cafe has been unoccupied since a Caribbean eatery left the premises last year.

Work to save Tenby Golf Club’s course from further erosion is underway, although some have labelled the plans as a ‘scar’ on the seaside town’s South Beach.
Known as the ‘birthplace of Welsh Golf’ Tenby’s links golf course established in 1888, has over many years, and even more so in recent times, suffered from the ongoing effects of coastal erosion and storm damage at points along its interface with South Beach.
Despite the erection of some ‘soft defences’ at the foot of the dunes, the actions of ‘mother nature’ has now impacted the course to such an extent that parts of adjacent holes are being lost to the erosion.
Two years ago, the Golf Club submitted plans to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority with proposals to construct a ‘coastal defence project’ to protect the course situated alongside from further erosion.
The application proposed the erection of a ‘temporary coastal defence system’ incorporating gabion baskets and ‘mattresses’ made of steel frames and filled with stone, to be set out in front and laid on top of the existing dune system for an approximate length of 200 metres, to protect the dunes and golf course adjacent to them from storm damage and erosion, for a period of up to 10 years.
The plans were submitted by STRI (acting as the Club’s agent) who are specialists in sports and golf course development, construction, and reconstruction.
Work has finally got underway this month, towards the Penally end of the beach and dunes, however one resident of the village which the golf course encompasses, has been left less than impressed at the early stages of the plans progressing.
“This is the current works being carried out by the Tenby Golf Club members for the sum of £120,000, but in my humble opinion it's a scar on a precious Tenby/Penally visitor asset,” said Penally villager Dave Laming.
Members of Tenby Civic Society also expressed several concerns at the time the application was approved by PCNPA as to the impact on the character of the beach and the locality.
“The South Beach is still a natural beach backed by dunes, but the proposal will make it look more like a man made environment,” said Harry Gardiner from the Civic Society.
“Over the years, damaged by the sea, the caissons would be very unattractive - would they be removed then?” he added.
