Curated by Amin Gulgee, Sara Vaqar Pagganwala and Adam Fahy-Majeed, “Jagah Hai” was an exhibition of 52 performance works by 56 artists from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad as well as Australia, France, and Germany. All performances took place at the same time throughout the gallery and its roof over the two-hour duration of the show. Since its inception in 2000, the Amin Gulgee Gallery, a noncommercial space, has consistently engaged with performance art, making it one of the few galleries in Pakistan to do so. “Jagah Hai” was arguably Pakistan’s largest-ever performance happening. It addressed issues of gender, tradition and individuality, among other concerns for the artists. The 200-page catalogue documents all of the performances and includes essays by the three curators as well as articles by Hamzah Ibn e Wasi, Aquila Ismail, Zehra Hamdani Mirza, and Nageen Shaikh.
