Description: In 1892 a man from Kekaha, Kauaʻi, named Kaluaikoʻolau, discovered that he and his young son had the disease known then as leprosy, or “ka maʻi hoʻokaʻawale”—the separating sickness. Swearing to do whatever it took to stay together, his family fled and went into hiding in Kalalau valley. The people of Kalalau helped and gave them sanctuary.But shortly after the Provisional Government seized power from Queen Lili’uokalani in 1893, they sent out armed forces to arrest Kaluaikoʻolau
