Bump stocks are gun accessories that allow semi-automatic rifles to fire more quickly. The ban was imposed by the Trump administration following the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. However, in a 6 to 3 ruling, the Supreme Court stated that a nearly 100-year-old law aimed at banning machine guns does not encompass bump stocks. Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, argued that a firearm equipped with a bump stock does not meet the definition of a 'machinegun' under federal law. It is important to note that despite the federal ban being lifted, bump stocks will still not be readily available nationwide.
