With the exception of 2021— when the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the 2020 baseball season—it was the first time values increased less than 4% year over year since 2010.<br/><br/>The good news? Since Forbes first began doing valuations of MLB teams in 1998, when the average team was valued at $194 million, owning a team would have beaten inflation by more than five-fold and beaten the S&P 500 (excluding the reinvestment of dividends) by nearly double.<br/><br/>Revenue in MLB rose 10% in 2023, to an average of $378 million per team—the steepest increase since 2015. That increase was due to record ticket, merchandise, television and licensing revenue. But operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) only went up 6%, to an average of $19 million due to more spending on players, technology and analytics.<br/><br/>Forbes’ team valuations are enterprise values (equity plus net debt) based on historical transactions and the future economics of the sport and each team. _waverley-heads-to-dry-dock-ahead-of-the-2024-season.webp "DUMBARTON ROCK.<br/><br/>Waverley passes Dumbarton Rock on her way to dry dock.<br/><br/>This morning Waverley set off from Glasgow for her annual round of dry dock inspections and maintenance. <br/>Waverley is expected to be in dry dock for around 10 daysbefore returning to Glasgow for final preparations ahead of the crew joining in early May.<br/><br/>WAVERLEY COMES BACK TO LIFE - Engine & Paddles turn for the first time this year!<br/>Waverley’s boilers were lit on Tuesday (2nd April) with steam slowly being raised to full working pressure. <br/>On Wednesday the engine room pumps were operated with the main engine turning today (Thursday) as we test systems and equipment on Waverley ahead of moving to dry dock in the coming week. <br/>This winter has seen some work carried out on the main engine with new parts being fitted. Elsewhere around the ship several contractors are currently working to complete their work scope including the refurbishment works in the crew accommodation. <br/>Waverley is expected to be in dry dock for around 10 days before returning to Glasgow for final preparation ahead of the crew joining in early May.
