Not since the New Beetle debuted in 1998 has Volkswagen dipped so heavily into its iconic past to launch an all-new vehicle. With the new ID. Buzz poised to hit showroom floors later this year, VW Senior Product Planner Ryan Gavin gave Forbes a sneak peek at the 2024 New York International Auto Show. <br/><br/>Between its history-inspired body lines and optional two-tone paint schemes, the ID. Buzz will draw as much attention as modern exotic cars, and not just from aging Deadheads. While its exterior styling borrows heavily from the original VW Microbus, including the oversized “VW” front logo, rear roof pillar air vents, and boxy shape, the interior features an array of modern tech. Dual power-sliding doors and a power rear liftgate feature Volkswagen’s “Easy Open and Close” tech, meaning a simple swipe of your foot beneath the doors will cause them to open (assuming the keys are nearby).<br/><br/>Once inside passengers will find ambient lighting, an optional panoramic sunroof with electrochromic tinting (can go from clear to opaque at the touch of a button), and a standard 12.9-inch central touchscreen featuring wireless App-Connect technology and wireless device charging. Flexibility comes from a removable center console, a sliding second-row seat that also folds down or reclines, a removable third-row seat, and standard features like a heated steering wheel, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated outboard second-row seats, and a nine-speak auto system (a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is optional).<br/><br/>With its impressive standard equipment list, wide range of interior and exterior design options, and advanced technology, this electric van could have the same impact on Volkswagen’s brand as the 1998 New Beetle, meaning a flood of demand from both traditional and new VW customers, along with a level of cultural impact worthy of the ID. The driver-assistance tech is available across the lineup, showcasing the automaker’s intentions with the SUV: to provide an up-to-date, attractive, and tech-forward vehicle for its customers.<br/><br/>With handsome looks inspired by the Wildcat EV concept car, the 2025 Enclave joins the rest of the refreshed Buick lineup with checkmark-shaped headlights, cross-body taillights, and a wide grille.<br/><br/>“With the launch of our Buick Enclave flagship SUV, our ICE portfolio is now complete with a full lineup of completely refreshed or all-new vehicles,” said Duncan Aldred, global VP of Buick. “The premium and sculptural design of the Enclave strikes a confident stance on any street, and the thoughtful technologies throughout elevate the driving experience.”<br/><br/>Buick adds that the new Enclave is longer, wider, and taller than the outgoing model. Despite that, its engine is smaller, shrinking from a 3.6-liter V6 to a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four. Fortunately, the new engine is small but mighty, increasing output from 310 hp (231 kW / 314 PS) for the old model, to 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS).<br/><br/>As the only engine offered across the lineup, the turbo-four is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The model will be offered with both front- and all-wheel-drive, and it will be able to tow up to 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg).<br/><br/>Inside, Buick has focused on high-tech toys to distinguish the 2025 Enclave from the competition. That means a new, biggest-in-class, 30-inch display that stretches from behind the steering wheel to the center of the dash as standard, incorporating both the infotainment screen and the instrument cluster.<br/><br/>In addition, the new Enclave also comes with standard wireless charging for your phone, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seven standard camera views to help you navigate tight spaces. It also comes with a rich assortment of standard safety tech, such as blind spot steering assistance, intersection automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and lane keep assist.<br/><br/>As mentioned above, Super Cruise is also available throughout the lineup, though it is an option.
