A mum-to-be was diagnosed with cancer at five months pregnant - when her extreme morning sickness turned out to be a symptom of the disease.

Caitlin McAlinden, 24, put her cancer symptoms - including a golf ball-sized lump on her neck, nausea and fatigue - down to morning sickness.

But after losing two stone in four months she was referred to a haematology team at Arrowe Park, the Wirral.

They gave her a neck biopsy and diagnosed her with stage one Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2024.

Caitlin is expected to make a full recovery but has to take a steroid injection and a blood-thinning pill every morning.

After her baby boy is born, on May 8, she’ll start a four-week course of chemotherapy.

Caitlin, a primary school teacher, from Wirral, Merseyside, said: “This isn’t the pregnancy I was hoping for - I haven’t felt well this entire time.

“Everything I want to do after my baby is born has to be put on pause due to the chemo.

“My odds are really good - but having my baby will be a good distraction for everything I’m going through.”

Caitlin found out she was pregnant on September 16, 2023 - after feeling nauseous at her birthday dinner the week before.

Her first trimester was “rocky” and she originally believed she had a severe form of morning sickness.

She was vomiting at least once a day and would fall asleep intermittently throughout the day.

But it wasn’t until Christmas Day that she first noticed the pain in her neck and after weighing herself, noticed she’d lost two stone.

She said: “I went back to County Armagh to visit my family for Christmas.

“I remember Christmas Day, falling asleep on the sofa and waking up with a really sore neck.

“I thought I’d just slept funny, but I started massaging my neck.

“That’s when I found a lump, about the size of a pea.”

Caitlin didn’t want to see a GP at first - believing the lump was just another “weird” sign of pregnancy.

But in just a week, her tiredness became worse and the pea-size lump tripled in size.

“I was so, so tired,” she said.

“Walking up the stairs alone would make me need to go for a lie down.

“I felt my neck again one day and the lump had become golf ball-sized.”

Her partner, Connor, 27, a procurement manager, told Caitlin she needed to see a doctor as soon as possible.

She visited her GP on January 2 and was referred for an initial ultrasound on her neck.

They gave her a biopsy on January 16 and the clinician asked Caitlin if she had any family history of Hodgkin lymphoma.

She told them one of her second cousins had gone through it years before and they urgently sent her for more blood tests.

“My doctor’s whole demeanour changed when I said I had a family history of it,” Caitlin said.

“I went for a blood test on the same day.”

Caitlin was diagnosed with stage one Hodgkin lymphoma on March 12, 2024, and instantly started steroid treatment to shrink the mass on her neck.

Launch of Glen Rosa at Ferguson Marine

Glen Rosa launch: What future for Ferguson Marine as hugely-delayed ferry leaves slipway?

It had taken shape at Ferguson Marine over more than eight years, but then, in a matter of seconds on Tuesday, was gone – leaving behind questions about the shipyard’s future (and recent turbulent past) as big as the huge slipway it had just vacated.

Glen Rosa’s belated launch could turn out to be the turning point for the embattled Port Glasgow yard. But we don’t know yet whether it’s towards the brighter future wellbeing economy Mairi McAllan talked up as the ship was sent on its way, or whether the yard’s hopes have effectively sailed away with the vessel.

Ms McAllan, surrounded by female apprentices as she spoke, pointed to them being the future of Scottish shipbuilding, which she said meant it was “in safe hands”.

The Cabinet secretary said later that her officials had just taken receipt of a bid for new investment from the yard to make it more competitive – which could be vital if Ferguson Marine is to secure a crucial contract to build seven smaller CalMac ferries similar to those it successfully completed in the not-so-distant past.

I also understand it will have to bid for the work rather than receive a direct award, to comply with international competition rules. However, Ms McAllan made no reference to Glen Rosa – and sister vessel Glen Sannox before it – being hugely behind schedule and multiple times over budget.

There was also nothing about the shock sacking of Ferguson Marine chief executive David Tydeman two weeks ago over “performance” issues, which senior industry officials told me was “unbelievable”. One said: “That guy is the best you have seen by a country mile.”

Glen Sannox left the yard for the last time last week for further sea trials, with the remaining work, including pipework for its liquefied natural gas fuel system, being completed at a dock in Greenock prior to its scheduled completion in May or June, with an update on this due next week.

If there are no further delays, the ferry is expected to start carrying passengers on the main Arran route to Brodick around August following CalMac’s own trials.

Glen Rosa is due to be finished in September next year. But as the crowd of hundreds – families of workers, locals and curious others – watched it slide away into the Clyde, more than just a landmark for drivers on the adjacent A8 has disappeared. The gap now spells “what next?”

Ferguson Marine’s interim chief executive John Petticrew, albeit a born and bred Inverclyde shipbuilder, and yard board member, is very much a caretaker manager, who has effectively been parachuted in for six months from Canada, where he now lives, to “put my best efforts into getting the vessels out of here as quickly as possible”.

Will he do things differently from his predecessor? “It’s a matter

As China’s stock market goes, so goes its billionaire population. And last year was not a good year for many Chinese stocks. As a result, the number of mainland Chinese billionaires on Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list fell for the third consecutive year. A total of 406 Chinese billionaires made the ranking, down from 495 a year ago and a record 626 in 2021. Continued fallout from the pandemic and geopolitical tension drove down stock prices and hurt economic growth in the world’s second largest economy. A deepening slump in the country’s property market also diminished fortunes.

Still, mainland China has the second largest number of billionaires globally, behind only the U.S., which has 813 billionaires this year.

Mainland China doesn’t include passport holders from Hong Kong or Macau, whom Forbes lists separately. Counting those billionaires, greater China has 473 members, down from 562 in 2023, 607 in 2022 and 698 in 2021.

The Forbes World’s Billionaires list is a snapshot of wealth using stock prices and exchange rates from March 8, 2024. Some people become richer or poorer within days of publication. We list individuals rather than multigenerational families who share fortunes, though we include wealth belonging to a billionaire’s spouse and children in certain cases, namely if that person is the founder of the fortune. For Russian billionaires, fortunes were calculated using ownership structures from February 2022, prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and before many made transfers of assets to managers, friends and others in an effort to protect their holdings from sanctions. We value a variety of assets, including private companies, real estate, art and more. We don’t pretend to know each billionaire’s private balance sheet (though some provide it). When documentation isn’t supplied or available, we discount fortunes. Video shows a 'poltergeist' - apparently knocking over drinks in one of Britain's most haunted pubs.

CCTV in Cornwall's Jamaica Inn is said to feature its resident spook Jack - a sailor murdered on nearby moorland over a century ago.

His poltergeist is said to haunt the famous boozer - with new video showing a drink being tipped over.

The video features in the third episode of Weird Britain broadcast as the second part of a double bill on Wednesday (April 10) at 11pm on BLAZE (Freeview channel 64).

Pub manager Katy Marriott: “We are very well known for our ghostly goings-on. We have Jack, who resides in the bar. He is quite a mischievous ghost.

''Jack was supposed to be a sailor, and the story goes that he was taken out on to the moors and murdered.''

Jamaica Inn’s paranormal prankster Jack is alleged to move drinks, and he is frequently blamed for spilled pints and smashed glasses.

But recently the CCTV cameras in the bar have caught him in the act, knocking a drinker’s beverage flying from the table.

Katy said: “They were sat at one of the tables in the main bar, very close to where Jack is supposed to sit.

“I have definitely experienced things here that I cannot explain.”

Local legend says that the ghost of Jack has been wandering the ancient inn and nearby moors for well over a century.

Jamaica Inn’s paranormal manager Karin Beasant said: “A lovely barmaid called April, it was a Sunday night, round about half past ten, she was doing the cleaning, as you can see from the footage.

''You see her turn her head because she hears the bar door open but no one enters.

''There was no one left in the bar, and then from another angle, you see the phone that’s on the wall lift up and fly across and drop.

''That scared her… but the staff are so used to things like this. I look at it this way, it’s his idea of fun, of a jest.”

Host of new show Weird Britain, Andy McGrath said “For all we know, these spirits are watching us every day, they’ve picked up on the technology and Jack’s saying ‘April, I just called to say I love you!’”

Edd Francis and Paul Cowmeadow of the Weird Britain Paranormal Research Team have certified the historic hotel as a haunted location.

Edd said: “The rich history and multitude of witnesses to paranormal activity at this site going back many, many decades is already compelling enough, but for many believers this new footage really will be the cherry on the cake.”

Paul added: “The footage certainly is very interesting. With such a stunningly preserved old inn, in such a beautiful part of the world, with all the promise of meeting Jack, I can see why the Jamaica Inn is such a popular and loved place, and would thoroughly recommend a visit.”
