A 5ft 10ins woman who towers over her short husband says trolls say he looks like her son but they couldn’t be more in love.<br/><br/>Cassandra Gaspard, 29, and her partner, Westin, 32, are constantly stared at due to their height difference.<br/><br/>Cassandra is five inches taller than Westin - who is 5ft 5ins - and is asked why she is with her husband by strangers.<br/><br/>But the couple couldn’t be happier, after tying the knot last month, and have never seen their height difference as a problem.<br/><br/>Westin, a technical account manager, from New York City, US, said: “In real life people don’t come up to me. They come up to my wife.<br/><br/>“They said ‘how can you be with him? He’s so short.'<br/><br/>“People stare at us – it happens a lot.<br/><br/>“Trolls say I look like her handbag or I’m her son. They are trying to be funny.”<br/><br/>Cassandra, who works in customer care, said: “It’s a little odd that people look at height difference and think we don’t deserve to be in a relationship.<br/><br/>“It’s not the norm – society thinks 6ft men need to be with shorter men.<br/><br/>“You love who you love.”<br/><br/>Casandra had embraced her height by the time she met Westin on Tinder in 2017 – and even wore five inch heels on their first date.<br/><br/>She said: “I grew up taller than everybody. I was the odd ball out.<br/><br/>“I accepted in my 20s that I couldn’t change.<br/><br/>“Now I’m mostly in heels.”<br/><br/>Westin had never had any issues with his height or dating girls taller than him.<br/><br/>He said: “My height is what it is. I can’t stretch myself.<br/><br/>“I always carried myself in a confident way.<br/><br/>“When I met my wife I said ‘you’re tall and there is nothing you can do about it. And I’m small and there is nothing I can do about it’.<br/><br/>“We never cared about it.<br/><br/>“It’s a blessing. If something is up on a shelf and I can’t get it. Guess who I’m calling? My wife.”<br/><br/>Despite their confidence, the couple did have to adjust to the constant stares and comments.<br/><br/>Cassandra said: “I remember the very first time someone said something.<br/><br/>“These two or three older men were looking at us.<br/><br/>“They said ‘she’s really tall, he’s really short – I can’t believe it’.”<br/><br/>Westin says he also gets comments asking if he has 'short man syndrome'.<br/><br/>He said: “Someone said 'I hope he doesn’t have a temper'.<br/><br/>“Short men get a bad rep and they think I have short man syndrome.<br/><br/>“People could be missing out on a life partner because of all these preconceived notions.<br/><br/>“It’s silly stuff like women can’t be with a man shorter than her. They want someone to look up to and protect them.<br/><br/>“I’m a boxer – I can protect my wife.<br/><br/>“It doesn’t have anything to do with my height.”<br/><br/>Cassandra added: “There are tall women married to short men.<br/><br/>“It’s not like OMG I just found a rare coin.”<br/><br/>Westin said: “Love is love no matter what.”

Scottish Young Musicians 2024<br/><br/>Euan Kemp, 17-year-old Saxophonist from East Dunbartonshire has won the Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer of the Year 2024 the final of which took place at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on 26 May 2024. Kemp, an S6 pupil from The Music School of Douglas Academy, has been playing Saxophone since he was 11 years old and performed music by Ryo Noda and André Jolivet.<br/><br/>Second place was shared by pianist Magnus Shanks (aged 16) from Aberdeenshire and accordion player Jake Johnstone (aged 15) from South Lanarkshire, who as accompanied on the piano by his younger sister. There were 31 finalists in all with a range of instruments including saxophone, clarsach, accordion, guitar, pipes, trumpet and more. The day culminated in performances by the winning Scottish Young Musicians Brass Ensemble of the Year, Campbeltown Brass Ensemble and Ensemble of the Year, Belmont Academy Woodwind Ensemble from South Ayrshire. <br/><br/>The Scotland-wide competition is run by The Music Education Partnership Group who work with every school and local authority to support music education and opportunities. The top 30 simple things that make us smile include a kind gesture from a stranger, waking up on a sunny morning – and seeing an elderly couple holding hands.<br/><br/>A study of 2,000 adults found seeing a loved one get good news, receiving a surprise gift and getting a hug also feature on the list.<br/><br/>While others experience the same joy after getting into bed with freshly washed sheets, seeing an old friend and watching a puppy.<br/><br/>But for 46 per cent of people, simply having someone smile at you makes you feel happy, with 65 per cent of adults saying that it improves their mood.<br/><br/>That positive boost lasts for an average of more than 13 minutes, leaving them more likely to be kinder to others (37 per cent), more motivated (19 per cent) or make a bold decision (nine per cent).<br/><br/>Bupa Dental Care [https://www.bupa.co.uk/dental/dental-care] commissioned the research as part of National Smile Month, to highlight the benefits the friendly gesture can have.<br/><br/>However, an experiment saw just 21 per cent of adults return the friendly gesture from a stranger.<br/><br/>During a two-hour period, actress Zara Naeem smiled at 112 different people as they walked past her - with only 24 replying with the same expression.<br/><br/>Psychologist, Jo Hemmings, said: “When we smile, a number of psychological and physiological changes occur that impact both ourselves and those around us.<br/><br/>“Smiling releases endorphins, dopamine and serotonin – hormones which improve our mood and our sense of well-being – and also reduces cortisol, our stress hormone, making us feel less anxious and more relaxed.<br/><br/>“A genuine and spontaneous smile which reaches our eyes – known as the Duchenne smile – can also lower our blood pressure and boost our immune system, by increasing our production of white blood cells.<br/><br/>“Smiles also have a positive effect on those around us, by reinforcing friendship, kindness and social bonding as well as having a contagious effect, creating positivity in those on the receiving end of a smile.”<br/><br/>The research also found the average adult claims to smile at a stranger five times a week – but 16 per cent admit they rarely or never return the gesture.<br/><br/>Of these, a third blame it on simply being lost in their own thoughts and not paying attention to what is happening around them, while 20 per cent put it down to being in a rush.<br/><br/>But 27 per cent avoid smiling at others over fears they will ‘look weird’ and 14 per cent are too embarrassed.<br/><br/>However, when a stranger smiles at them, half of adults feel happy and 32 per cent feel uplifted.<br/><br/>Others feel comforted (11 per cent), ‘warm and fuzzy’ (15 per cent) and confident (11 per cent).<br/><br/>Less than one in 10 felt a negative emotion, such as confused (eight per cent) or sceptical (nine per cent). <br/><br/>Despite this, less than half (48 per cent) always return a smile from a stranger, with 34 per cent of those worried the grin was not meant for them.<br/><br/>While 32 per cent claim to be so surprised by the gesture that they don’t react quick enough.
