The Uk's First Drug Consumption Room<br/><br/>NHS Scotland is advertising staff vacancies for the new safer drugs consumption facility in Glasgow.<br/><br/>The local health board, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, is looking to hire a nurse team leader and an operations manager for the clinic, which will be based at Hunter Street in the city centre.<br/><br/>The pilot project is housed in the same building as an existing drug treatment facility. A report to the Glasgow City Integration Joint Board meeting highlighted that following a recent HIV outbreak, an assessment “found there are approximately 400 to 500 people injecting drugs in public places in Glasgow city centre on a regular basis”.<br/><br/>The city council backed the creation of the facility last year after years of legal wrangling was resolved by Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC.<br/><br/>Scotland’s top law officer said it would not be “in the public interest” to prosecute people using such a service, which allows those who inject drugs to do so under medical supervision, as well as offering care that could aid them in their recovery from addiction.<br/><br/>The £2.3 million facility is expected to be in operation in the next six months and will be the first of its kind in the UK.<br/><br/>The job advert reads: “The Glasgow SDCF [safer drugs consumption facility] will provide hygienic environments where illicit drugs (purchased off the premises) can be consumed under clinical supervision with the onsite availability of sterile injecting equipment, advice on injecting technique, overdose assistance, on-site health and social service.<br/><br/>“As well as responding to medical problems and emergencies that arise from injecting drug use, we will provide a range of other health and psychosocial interventions, as well as linking with services in the third sector.<br/><br/>“It is anticipated that benefits will include engagement with people who use drugs in the vicinity, reduce drug-related health harms, reduce infectious disease transmission, increase access to treatment, care and support services, reduce stigma and supporting vulnerable people to engage with appropriate services.”<br/><br/>The deadline for applications is March 31.

Callum and Motability have teamed up to design a next-generation electric minibus with wheelchair users in mind<br/><br/>UK-based company Motability Operations and design studio Callum have revealed the eVITA concept, an all-electric minibus designed to support the mobility of wheelchair users.<br/><br/>eVITA was designed and developed by Callum with input from Motability Operations' customer clinics. Designed as a next-generation electric wheelchair accessible vehicle (eWAV) concept, eVITA addresses the most common issues with EV conversions, including limited interior height due to floor-mounted batteries, accessibility and practicality.<br/><br/>The eVITA has a similar footprint to the Citroen Berlingo, measuring 4,520 mm (178 in) long, 1,908 mm (75.1 in) wide and 1,800 mm (70.9 in) high, with a wheelbase of 2,980 mm (117.3 in). The exterior design is quite modern, adopting a short hood, a large greenhouse and very short overhangs.<br/><br/>The highlight of the concept is the split tailgate with integrated low-angle ramp that provides easy access from the rear. This is joined by four more doors on the sides, two traditional and two sliding. When the vehicle is parked, LED puddle lights highlight the area where the ramp will be located at the rear to alert other drivers.<br/><br/>The repackaged battery is placed in a low position behind the first row of seats, ensuring that the floor is completely level so that the wheelchair can move freely. Additionally, the hatchback-style ride height of 160 mm (6.3 inches) and lower seating position means the wheelchair user sits at a similar height to other passengers.<br/><br/>The 50 kWh battery offers an estimated range of approximately 200 miles (322 km) and can supplement energy from dual charging ports, one at the rear and the other at the front. Another engineering focus was the highly damped rear suspension, which offers a supple ride and predictable handling with minimal body roll thanks to its low center of gravity.
