Two-thirds of the list’s members are worth more than a year ago; only one fourth are poorer. Much of the gains come from the top 20, who added a combined $700 billion in wealth since 2023, and from the U.S., which now boasts a record 813 billionaires worth a combined $5.7 trillion. China remains second, with 473 (including Hong Kong) worth $1.7 trillion, despite weak consumer spending and a real estate bust that helped wipe out $200 billion in wealth and knocked 89 billionaires from the ranks. _5-people-who-fell-off-the-2024-billionaires-list.webp "$14.2 trillion, on Forbes’ 2024 World’s Billionaires list—but not everyone is celebrating. An unlucky quarter of those on the ranking are poorer than they were in 2023. And 189 people fell below the $1 billion threshold, losing their membership to the three-comma club entirely.<br/><br/>These billionaire drop-offs include moguls behind some notable brands, such as Estée Lauder heir Gary Lauder; Hajime Satomi, former CEO of Japanese gaming company Sega Sammy; and David Tran, owner of the company behind Sriracha hot sauce.<br/><br/>The overwhelming majority of the losses came from China, one of the few huge markets to sputter in an otherwise-positive year amid fallout from slower economic growth, a property market glut, a decline in foreign investment and rising geopolitical tensions. China shed 133 billionaires (including Hong Kong and Macau) since last year’s list. _new-cctv-piran-ditta-khan-has-been-convicted-almost-20-years-after-pc-sharon-beshenivsky-was-killed.webp "The mastermind of an armed robbery that ended in a police officer being shot dead has been found guilty of her murder.<br/><br/>Piran Ditta Khan has been convicted almost 20 years after Pc Sharon Beshenivsky was killed while interrupting a raid at family-run Universal Express travel agents in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in November 2005.<br/><br/>She and her colleague Pc Teresa Milburn, who were both unarmed, were shot at point-blank range by one of the three men who had just carried out the robbery as he emerged from the door of the business.<br/><br/>Almost two decades on, Khan is the last of the seven men involved in the robbery to be convicted.<br/><br/>The 75-year-old flew to Pakistan two months after Pc Beshenivsky’s death and remained at liberty there until he was arrested by Pakistani authorities in January 2020 and then extradited to the UK last year.<br/><br/>Prosecutors said former takeaway boss Khan was the group’s ringleader and, although he did not leave the safety of a lookout car during the raid, played a “pivotal” role in planning it and knew that loaded firearms were to be used.<br/><br/>They told jurors this made him guilty of PC Beshenivsky’s murder “as surely as if he had pulled the trigger on that pistol himself”.")
